Amid the pressure from the industry to lessen the requirements of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced Thursday that providers will be able to comply with the MACRA at their own pace and choose from four options.
MACRA is intended to reform the physician payment model and is meant to reward the quality of care rather than the quantity of services provided. By January 1, 2017, physicians who are eligible to participate will be able to choose from four payment models.
One of these payment models include the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), which will base payment on quality measures and the use of EHR.
Here are the current options for physicians to choose from to comply with MACRA:
- Data that is provided by providers can be submitted to avoid a negative payment adjustment
- Providers can submit data on how the practice is improving and how it utilizes technology to qualify for small payments
- Practices that are ready to go for 2017 can submit a report of the full year’s quality data
- Providers can opt to participate in an advanced alternative payment model.
