The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), proposed on Thursday their plans to compensate doctors for telehealth services, where it is consulting via telephone or other methods of telecommunication on multiple types of devices.
Telehealth plays a significant role in providing health care to elderly and disabled patients, making it easier for physicians to care for their patients quickly and from any location. Telehealth is especially useful for those patients who reside in rural areas or who do not have access to transportation to health facilities when in need for care.
In the CMS’ proposed rule, doctors would be compensated for their work through telehealth as well as for their time spent watching videos of patients who seek care and diagnosis. Currently under Medicare billing standards put into place since 1995, doctors will bill Medicare using more generic evaluation and management visit codes, none specific to telehealth. In the new rule, doctors can distinguish their patients needs through their medical evaluation or the amount of time spent with a patient.
