The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services released the Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings that will be used to rate hospitals in the nation on the quality of the facility and services.
The Hospital Star Ratings are measured on a scale from one to five stars, Hospitals with a five star ratings will hold the highest rating on the scale. The ratings will be posted on the CMS website, the Hospital Compare Site, and will have ratings for 4,000 hospitals.
The Hospital Star Ratings are based on 64 measures to grade a hospital’s overall quality. All of the measures are posted on the Hospital Compare website.
A look at the Hospital Star Ratings So Far:
- Only 102 out of 4,599 (2.2%) hospitals earned five stars
- 20.3% earned four stars
- 38.5% earned three stars
- 15.7% earned two stars
- 2.9% earned only one star
- 20.4% could not be rated due to lack of data
The ratings have been widely criticized since it’s initial announcement by the CMS, which caused the ratings to be delayed since April.
