The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced Wednesday a new quality payment plan called the Quality Payment Program, which is proposed to guide how the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) will pay physicians.

The Quality Payment Program is expected to launch in 2019 and is currently not in its final stages. The CMS is currently open to comments and feedback within the next two months.

The proposed program will be a combination of three programs, the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS), the Physician Value-Based Payment Modifier and Meaningful Use (MU). The plans were formulated as a method to provide incentive to physicians to provide quality health care for their patients at a lower cost.

In the Quality Payment Program, there will be two options for physicians to choose from. One option is the Advanced Alternative Payment Models or the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS).
