A new survey released by the Gallup National Health and Well-Being Index on Wednesday revealed that the number of uninsured American adults has increased from 10.9 % in 2016 to 13.7 % in 2018, which is a growth of an estimated 7 million adults uninsured.
The current uninsured rate of 13.7% American adults is the highest it has been since the beginning of 2014. During this time, the Affordable Care Act had expanded coverage in most states.
Across the board, the uninsured rate is seen across many groups, across men women, all income levels, and almost all regions of the country. Of these group types, the most affected groups are young adults aged 18 – 34, whose uninsured rate by itself was 21%, women and income levels under $48,000.
The rise in the uninsured rate can be attributed to the increase in health insurance premiums and the decrease in health insurers participating in the health insurance markets. Along with these factors, the reduction in the open enrollment period, as well as the smaller funding for advertising Healthcare.gov, has contributed to the spike in the uninsured rate. The end of cost-sharing reduction payments by the Trump administration is also a factor in the low enrollment rate.
